Potting in Dai language is “Banmo”. Pottery is commonly known as “clay pot”. In the early Ming Dynasty, Qian Zuxun wrote in Baiyi Zhuan: “Dai people make pottery for practical use.” However, Dai ancestors did not created Manlun (“slow wheel”) pottery with ease. According to the Dai creation myth Batamajiapeng Shangluo: “At the beginning, the bowls, pots and pans made by clay were too heavy and melted into water easily. People later mastered shaping and firing techniques. The making of Dai Manlun pottery has been gradually developed and well inherited in Dai areas as a precious cultural heritage.

制陶在傣语中被称为“板磨”，陶又俗称“土锅”。傣族自古喜爱用陶，明初钱祖训所著《百夷传》称：傣族“惟陶冶之器是用”。然而傣族先民创制陶器的历史并不是一帆风顺的，据傣族创世史诗《巴塔麻戛捧尚罗》所载：刚开始，用泥土做出的碗、锅、盆不仅太重，而且一装水就“被水吃啦”“随水跑啦”。后来，人们在实践中逐渐掌握了捏碗、烧锅的技艺，逐渐迭代精进。如今，傣族传统慢轮制陶技艺，作为一笔丰厚的文化遗产在傣族地区得到了良好的传承和发展。
