Introduction to Golmud: “Germu” is a Mongolian transliteration, meaning a river-intensive place. It is composed of two unconnected areas in the central and southern parts of the Qaidam Basin and the Tanggula Mountain area in the western part of Qinghai Province and the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. On the alluvial plain of the Golmud River in the central and southern parts of the Qaidam Basin, the average elevation is 2780 meters, which is a plateau continental climate. As of 2011, Golmud City has a population of nearly 120,000 square kilometers. The city has a population of 300,000 and the urban population accounts for 86.6%. There are 34 ethnic groups including Han, Mongolia, Tibet and Hui, among which the Han population accounts for 69.8%. Golmud City is rich in tourism resources, including the unique natural landscapes such as the source of the Yangtze River, the Wanzhang Salt Bridge, the Snow Mountain Glacier, the Kunlun Snow Scene, the Bohai Sunrise, and the Desert Forest. It has won the honorary title of “China Excellent Tourism City”.
