"Chenghai" County began in the forty-two years of Jiajing (AD 1563), taking the meaning of "Chengjing Sea". The Ming and Qing dynasties of Chenghai County belonged to Chaozhou Prefecture, and belonged to the Chaozhou Administrative Inspector Commission during the Republic of China. Since 1949, it has been subordinated to the Chaomei People's Administrative Committee, the Chaoshan District Administrative Inspector's Office, the Chaoshan District Commissioner's Office, the Guangdong Provincial Office, the Shantou Commissioner's Office, the Shantou District Revolutionary Committee, and the Shantou District Administrative Office. Since December 1983, Chenghai has become a county under the jurisdiction of Shantou City. On April 18, 1994, with the approval of the State Council, the county was established as a county-level city, and Chenghai City was managed by Shantou City. In April 2003, the administrative division of Shantou was greatly adjusted, and Chenghai was removed from the city and was one of the jurisdictions of Shantou City.
