Yunnan Province, China's provincial administrative unit, located in the southwest of China's border with the provincial capital Kunming. The abbreviation of Yunnan is "滇" or "cloud", which is one of the important birthplaces of human civilization. Yunnan Yuanmou, who lived 1.7 million years ago, is the earliest human being in China and Asia discovered as of 2013. During the Warring States Period, it was the place where the Yi tribe lived. Yunnan is the "South of Caiyun" and "Colorful Yunnan". Another saying is that it is named after the "South of Yunling". It covers an area of 390,000 square kilometers, accounting for 4.11% of the national area, and ranks 8th among the provincial administrative regions. The total population is 45.96 million (2010), accounting for 3.35% of the national population, and the population ranks 12th. It has 8 cities and 8 ethnic autonomous prefectures.
